There are so many valuable lessons to learn from voices and leaders from around the world.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage/LatinX Month, we are awe-inspired by incredible icons, such as César Chavez, Dolores Huerta, Dr. Ellen Ochoa, Sonia Sotomayor, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and so many more.
Recently, I’ve drawn inspiration from a powerful quote by Dr. Antonia Novello, the first woman and Hispanic to become Surgeon General of the United States.
Dr. Novello advocated improving public health awareness and access, especially for people of color. In particular, she worked to eliminate nutritional problems, domestic violence, and all forms of substance abuse. She also initiated new opportunities to bring LatinX Americans together for national and local meetings to discuss community health needs.
It is clear that Dr. Novello was very accomplished in her career as she rose to one of the most prestigious roles in her profession as a physician. She was obviously passionate and committed. At the same time, she kept people at the heart of her work and prioritized the common good.
Dr. Novello said: “I believe that fortitude is key. More than anything, be consistent. Go at it. Go at it. Go at it. When you succeed, don’t forget the responsibility of making somebody else succeed with you.”
What a powerful idea, although the notion of helping others may often be overlooked. The dangers of thwarted capitalism and individualism can prompt us to keep ourselves as número uno. Everything is about my wants. My needs. My comfort.
But, Dr. Novello provides a significant charge for us all in this simple quote. Yes, go be excellent through consistency and hard work. Conquer challenges and achieve your dreams.
Just don’t forget: Reach back to help someone else.

In my opinion, ensuring one’s financial well-being is a form of public health. The cost of living to afford good healthcare, access to medicine, and a quality life ultimately come at a high price to pay.
So, as you go at it and reach milestones of success – let’s remember those in need of assistance.
Here are a few ideas how to give back to your community and share your money wins with others for a mutually beneficial experience:
- Share Your $$ Experience: Everyone loves a good story. Your experience with money may not have all the highs and lows like a Hollywood film, but it’s your story. And, it’s your truth. You may never know the impact of simply answering someone’s questions about how you paid for college, paid off debt, leveled up in your career, etc.
- Inform and Educate About $$: Talk about financial ideas and information you have learned. Share your personal favorite $$ podcasts, articles, and/or book recommendations. Perhaps, Rich Dad, Poor Dad? The Millionaire Next Door? Or Get Good with Money?
- Donate $$: In some instances, you may wish to make a financial contribution to support someone going through a more difficult time. You can also donate money to your preferred charity – such as a local church, community center, advocacy organization, or more. (Remember donations to non-profit organizations are tax-deductible.)
- Donate Time: Time is one of the most valuable assets you can give to someone because you can never get those hours or minutes back. You can make a great impact by volunteering or offering your professional service to assist someone in need.
Thank you Dr. Novello for your legacy and these inspiring words. We’re all the better when we’re all better.
